RL

Tonight, our good friend Ryan Lindow is performing at Momo Lounge (2708 J St.), and is releasing his new Goodenough 12″ 45rpm vinyl record. I conducted a short interview with Ryan today at the shop.

Give us a quick background on the record release. This is a project I’ve been excited about since I heard the first mix of “Sixteen.”

The record released on April 20, electronically on both Amazon and iTunes. The vinyl edition is also currently carried at a few select shops like Vinyl Records in Vancouver. Tonight’s show marks the official release of the 45rpm vinyl record in Sacramento.

In my experience, there are certain sonics in every RL mix that seem to capture the listener. I think it’s definitely something that purists and casual fans can appreciate. To the people who have never experienced a Ryan Lindow or CityState performance, how would you describe your sound?

I would describe it as electronic, with strong influences of dub and U.K. garage music…a more minimal side of dub step in there. It’s the more techno-inspired side of the spectrum.

Who are some of the other performers on the bill?

Adam (SEMF) put together a great lineup for tonights show. DJ Esef, Ras Matthew (Matt Pailes), Sacramento/Copenhagen collaboration CHLLNGR, and Poirier from Montreal. Poirier, from the Ninja Tune record label, is on a break from his European tour. This is one of only four stops on his short West Coast run in the U.S.

Thank you for your time, sir. Any last thoughts you would like to share?

I’d like to thank SEMF for putting the show together. This is one of the only shows I’ve seen in Sacramento where the marketing focus is based solely on the music. No arbitrary themes, no dress code, no gimmicks. It should be a lot of fun.

8:30 @ Momo Lounge. 21+, $5

See you all tonight.

FALSE presents: Better Off Dead 2010

It’s been a minute since our last shipment from FALSE’s Better Off Dead collection. Following up on 2009’s Jacob the Murderer with Karl the Butcher, the popular line continues its mocking portrayals of high fashion, living by the motto that “some things are better off dead.”

Macashreda

Last weekend during the Bicycle Film Festival/AMGEN events, our friends at Macaframa put on a competition at nearby Fremont Park.

Macashreda brought out all types of riders, from middle school kids to living legends.

Charles is the man. When it comes to throwing sprint and alley cat events in town, nobody puts in more time and effort than him. Also, he can serve you the most brutal Death By Chocolate cake you’ll ever have.

Kris maintains a great blog, LOCKEDCOG, that focuses on fixed gear culture and news. He’s also a beast on the trick bike.

Brad had his bike stolen the night before (Eighth Inch V2 Scrambler…let somebody know if you spot it), but was able to borrow one and still rip it.

Matt Rodriguez, Squirrel, and John Cardiel.

…looking forward to more this Summer.

SFC

Time away from Lucky Lefty’s is rare and at a premium, so when I get a chance to venture outside of the shop, I try to make the most of it. This past weekend, I visited a few of our friends in nearby San Francisco.

Amid the hustle and bustle of the Mission District is a new gem, the Benny Gold flagship store (3171 21st. Street). Benny, with the assistance of Form 3, recently finished a great build out, featuring a clean retail space downstairs, coupled with a great workspace upstairs. Instead of clashing with its surroundings, the shop incorporates the feel and culture of the neighborhood into its aesthetics, an aspect that we strove for with our own build out.

While the business is growing at a healthy rate, the operation remains tight – BG at the helm, alongside his wife, Hiromi. Hiromi recently quit her job to work on the brand full-time. She is awesome.

Gabriel (right) is holding down the retail space.

Nobody is cooler than Levi. This is a fact that you cannot dispute. Gentleman, style icon, and certified chick magnet.

After visiting BG, I made my way over to Japan Town. Fatlace HQ, the original site of Wong’s Bait Shop, is a must visit. Fatlace features a great selection of brands, along with dope in-house products (1630 Post)

The New People building (1746 Post) is a crazy hub of modern Japanese fashion, film, and art. It even houses gothic lolita brand Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, heavily featured in a movie that Neek and I will gladly cosign – Shimotsuma Monogatari or Kamikaze Girls.

My celebration of all things Japanese continued at Pac Bell (or AT&T park, if you want to be a dick about it). The Giants hosted Japanese Heritage night at the park, complete with complimentary sake boozing in the parking lot.

The Giants exercised their recent demons by putting a well deserved beat down on the Houston Astros. Masters of good timing, the Giants Japanese-American players picked the right night to make solid contributions. Travis Ishikawa had a hit and a run scored, while Todd Hideki Wellemeyer allowed 2 ER for a win. Overall, a great experience.

Back to work.

danpatsu shiki

The title of this post refers to the ceremonial cutting of a retiring sumo champion’s top knot. While I am not nearly as distinguished, or 400 pounds, I have been growing my hair out for almost two years now. With good cause, that streak came to an end yesterday at Anthony’s Barbershop.

After tying my hair off, Coolio style, they lopped off my hair, Last of the Mohicans style. The severed locks were then bagged and shipped off to the American Cancer Society x Pantene hair donation program. The program takes donated hair and turns it into wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.

The next step looked something like this…

The remaining clippings of my hair, along with those of other customers, will be gathered by the shop and sent to the group Matter Of Trust, a non-profit that recycles and reuses materials for the purpose of sustainable systems. Matter Of Trust is currently using donated hair to make booms and mats that are used to soak up oil in the Gulf of Mexico. If you plan on cutting your hair before the weather heats up, definitely consider these charities.

Big thanks to Shawn and Anthony. Anthony’s Barbershop is a great spot located at 2408 21st. Street. From pompadours to liberty spikes, they can handle pretty much any classic men’s hair cut you could ever ask for.
