Miller, in association with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), launched a recent campaign to support returning veterans. For every High Life bottle cap or can tab sent in, Miller will donate 10 cents towards paying soldiers’ way into “sporting events, concerts, outdoor adventures, and more.”
To those of us who are consistent consumers of the Champagne of Beers, I encourage you to participate in this promotion. It takes very little effort, and goes to a great cause.
You can drop of your caps and tabs here at the shop, or at The Golden Bear (2326 K St.).
The title of this post refers to the ceremonial cutting of a retiring sumo champion’s top knot. While I am not nearly as distinguished, or 400 pounds, I have been growing my hair out for almost two years now. With good cause, that streak came to an end yesterday at Anthony’s Barbershop.
After tying my hair off, Coolio style, they lopped off my hair, Last of the Mohicans style. The severed locks were then bagged and shipped off to the American Cancer Society x Pantene hair donation program. The program takes donated hair and turns it into wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.
The next step looked something like this…
The remaining clippings of my hair, along with those of other customers, will be gathered by the shop and sent to the group Matter Of Trust, a non-profit that recycles and reuses materials for the purpose of sustainable systems. Matter Of Trust is currently using donated hair to make booms and mats that are used to soak up oil in the Gulf of Mexico. If you plan on cutting your hair before the weather heats up, definitely consider these charities.
Big thanks to Shawn and Anthony. Anthony’s Barbershop is a great spot located at 2408 21st. Street. From pompadours to liberty spikes, they can handle pretty much any classic men’s hair cut you could ever ask for.
For many of us, this is a time full of joyous occasions; however, right now, several of our brothers and sisters are without adequate shelter from the harsh winter elements. Please remember that this is also a time for giving.
Starting today until next Wednesday, December 23, we are collecting gently-used coat and jacket donations at the shop. These donations will be distributed to local residents in need.
If you bring just one used coat or jacket to the shop, we’re going to give you a 10% discount to thank you for helping the cause. If you want to bring more than one, I highly encourage doing so. If you are not in the Sacramento area, I recommend that you consider making a similar donation to a local charity.
Thanksgiving is coming up, and many households in the Sacramento region are still food insecure. This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Lucky Lefty’s will be taking food donations at the shop. All goods will be donated to the Sacramento Food Bank.
The Sacramento Food Bank needs - Canned and dry goods - Fresh produce - Unexpired, USDA certified, perishable food items (meat, eggs, dairy) - Pots, pans, plates, and silverware
Anybody who brings in a donation will receive a discount for any in-store product. Please help out!
